Dave Horton has always shown up for others.

Now it’s our turn to show up for him.

Dear friends, family & community,

Many of you know that Dave has been fighting terminal cancer. Despite the years of health issues, he has continued to live life with grace and gusto -- as a husband to Jamie, a father to Natalie, Ella, and Jack, and as a pastor, coach, educator for students with special needs, community chaplain, mentor, and dear friend to so many.

Dave & Jamie have been together since they were 19 and both celebrated turning 50 this year. They are an inspiring duo -- “Jamie&Dave” feels like one word. Dave’s three kids are his pride. There’s no place Dave would rather be than with his kids. Each of them says that Dave is their best friend.

Those of you who know Dave have seen firsthand how he’s navigated every day over the last many years through surgeries, treatments, and hospital stays with the same optimism, warmth, humor, and humility he’s always had – not allowing these “minor hurdles” to overtake his focus on appreciating the best things in life. Through it all, he and Jamie have had a strong faith and deep gratitude, and they continue to be there for others.

Transitioning to Hospice

As the cancer has progressed, Dave has undergone multiple treatments, though many were unaware of his situation as he continued to teach, coach, and show up for others. When the 3rd type of chemo was ineffective and caused significant side effects, Dave and Jamie, with counsel from Dave’s medical team of specialists at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, decided treatment should stop and instead to prioritize time with his family and his quality of life. So, Dave is transitioning to hospice.

Financial Need

Dave was unable to obtain life insurance due to his significant health issues at a young age. Jamie has continued to work more than full-time at an assisted living center. And although they are both employed with health insurance, medical bills, everyday expenses, and college costs for two kids are still a stark reality. While we may not be able to change Dave’s medical situation, we have an opportunity to help the family with contributions.

The last thing that should be on their minds is the financial burden that this medical system leaves people in their hardest times.

How funds will be used:

In his personal and occupational life, Dave has always chosen a path of love and helping those in need. We’re unclear right now how much time Dave has with us, but we plan to make the best of it and support him in any way we can.
