On the evening of Wednesday, February 18 2026, a young father and community member, Da’Quain Tre Johnson, was shot and killed by the Grand Rapids Police Department. DQ was only 32 years old and the father of 3 young girls. He was a well known community member, son, father, and loving man that would do anything to take care of his people. This fundraiser has been created by the Grand Rapids Mutual Aid Network (GRAMAN) with the permission of Angelica, Da’Quain’s mother, and the rest of his family. Our community’s goal is to raise $20,000 to cover burial costs, transportation, therapy, medical bills, a private autopsy, and other costs that the family may inquire during this painful time.
DQ was riding his bike when police and K9 unit then pursued Johnson, following him to the parking lot of Eastern Lofts on Eastern Avenue SE, where he unmounted his bicycle and was attacked by K9s and police officers. While being restrained, DQ was shot 3 times in the back.
Angelica Johnson, Johnson's mother, said that her son sustained neck injuries from the police dog and had been shot "execution style" in the back of the head stating, “Y’all couldn’t see it, but you will soon enough. But my son was shot in the back of the head. He was mauled in the neck by a dog. And the way he was shot … you could tell that his hands were being held behind his back.”
Johnson's daughters saw the shooting of their father outside of their apartment. This tragic loss has deeply impacted his family and children, any donation will go directly to the Johnson family in attempts to keep the family stable during a time of uncertainty.
How the money will be spent:
$5,000 for proper burial,
$10,000 for private autopsy,
$5,000 for medical bills and transportation.
