Cristina Jaimes will be 65 in July. She’s a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. Many in our small town might know her from HEB, where she devoted 20 years before retiring after a fall in our yard that broke her shoulder. Cristina was deeply loved by customers and co-workers alike. She’s the sweetest woman I know—always breaking her back for everyone and never asking for anything in return. Her heart is huge, and even though life hasn’t always dealt her the best hand, she’s always found a way to keep going. As her daughter, it breaks my heart to see her go through so much, but I’m grateful she’s devoted her life to God now.

Now, Cristina’s cancer is back. She’s facing stage 3, and our family is doing everything we can to support her through this incredibly difficult time. The treatments she needs—chemo and radiation—require her to travel back and forth to Austin, which is a huge strain both physically and financially. On top of that, she needs help with food, medications, and just keeping up with everyday bills.

Before her diagnosis, my parents were already struggling to get by. Things became even harder when my dad broke his neck back in December, and he’s still waiting for it to heal. Now, my mom is not only fighting cancer but also trying to help my dad with his own medical visits. With both of my brothers in prison, it feels like our family has been hit from every direction at once.
