On Sunday July 23, 2023, Roxanne, Jig (Jordan) and Colin Mallard were in a car accident, resulting in their truck rolling multiple times, just outside of Cranbrook BC.
Jig and Roxanne have minor injuries, however Colin is in serious condition due to a collapsed lung, displaced c5&6 vertebrae and a spinal cord injury.
Thanks to the heroic efforts of his Dad, mom, by-standers, and emergency services, Colin was safely extricated from the badly damaged truck, resuscitated and transported to the hospital.
Colin was transferred to Foothills Medical Centre early Monday where he underwent cervical discectomy and fusion surgery.
Doctors were able to secure his spine internally through the front of his neck and back.
His spinal cord is an incomplete injury and not completely severed.
Although Colin is not currently able to move the lower half of his body, his family and doctors remain optimistic that, he may regain movement and maybe even walk again.
Colin is currently in the ICU in Calgary on a breathing tube and a feeding tube. Once his condition stabilizes he will move to the spine unit and eventually, the rehab unit.
Colin’s road to recovery will be a long, challenging one.
If you have ever had the pleasure of getting to know Colin, you would know how truly inspirational he is. Not only does he master life with an extra chromosome (Down syndrome), but he has overcome many surgeries and medical complications from the day he was born.
Through all of his challenges he shows up everyday shining his light with a zest for life.
Colin is always down to “talk shop” about recent work his brother, dad or brother in-law has done, or share the names of all his niece’s and nephew’s, as well as remember everyone’s birthday, even if only told once! His love for his sisters and mom, in his own protective way, is truly heartwarming. If everyone could emulate Colin’s love and deep attachment to his family, the world would be a better place.
Although we cannot take Colin’s pain away, or predict his future, we can help to give him what he loves most, his family.
The money raised will go directly to the Mallard family in order to ensure they can stay with Colin now and through his recovery as well as provide him any and all assistance he may need as he navigates through this new challenge.
