Liver Transplant Support for Chris Joseph

It has been so incredibly overwhelming, in the best possible way, to see and feel the outpouring of love and support from so many people regarding my husband’s condition. Today is Chris’s 46th birthday, and never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that he would be needing a liver from our son Jarrett who has the same blood type. He is concerned for the physical, mental, and financial strain this is on our family with him being so sick, and unable to work. On September 5th, 2020, we were told that this disease is life threatening and irreversible without a liver transplant. I believe once he gets the transplant and returns to work in a year that the takeaway of this whole experience will be of Empathy.  Chris has been a nurse for almost 15 years, and I don’t think he truly understood the challenges a hospital patient goes through when they are sick until now. He is now facing a new set of challenges that will test his mind, body, spiritual strength but I have faith we will overcome this. We have completed all the Disability paperwork and applied for Social Security benefits so hopefully these will be approved.  Once he gets the transplant then he will be eligible for Medicare for a year and social security disability benefits. The average cost of a liver transplant (including insurance) could reach $60,000 and hopefully he can get the needed transplant by January. Thursday the 15th Chris will be going to have another paracentesis (draining of the fluid in his abdomen) due to his ascites returning, and this may be our new norm until he is completely cleared for the transplant.
