Our Ithaca friend Cheryl (Cheri) Botts, single mom and community Spanish teacher, was diagnosed in June 2019 with Multiple Myeloma (MM) and a rare disease called Amyloidosis*. Both of these diseases are serious blood disorders originating in the bone marrow and are best treated by a stem-cell transplant.
Cheryl began urgent chemotherapy treatment 12 weeks ago in Rochester, has responded well, and is preparing to go to Boston Medical for a stem-cell transplant in November. This stem cell procedure is intense and requires friends to be with her 24/7 throughout the 5-8 weeks transplant.
Her doctors determined that she can't go back to work until she is better, which could take up to a year. Her financial future is uncertain because she is out of sick days and is also going to have to start paying for her health insurance. Disability payments could start in December but she they will only be a portion of her current income.
Our GoFundMe is hoping to raise $5000 to help Cheryl pay bills, provide travel expenses for her stem cell transplant, and any other expenses resulting from this intense, life-prolonging treatment.
Please donate what you find comfortable for her cause. All donations, large or small, will make a huge difference.
Cheryl, her son Nico (now 13) friends & family thank you deeply!!
*MM is a blood cancer is caused by mutated, multiplying blood plasma which can damage the bones, immune system, kidneys, and red blood cell count. Amylodosis is a rare disease that occurs when a substance called amyloid builds up in and causes damage to the involved organs. Amyloid is an abnormal protein that is produced in the bone marrow and can be deposited in any tissue or organ.
