My mother, Chastity Smith Eaton, is facing a challenging journey with triple negative stage 3 breast cancer. She has been out of work for three months so far undergoing her first half of chemotherapy and still has three months left to go. Although chemotherapy is an important part of the treatment, it is not the end of her cancer journey. Once chemotherapy is complete, she will undergo a mastectomy. At this time, the full extent of the surgery cannot be determined because additional imaging will be needed after chemotherapy to evaluate her response to treatment.

Her surgical care will be complex and will require multiple trips to Roanoke to coordinate treatment with both a breast surgical oncologist and a plastic surgeon for reconstruction. The treatment process is expected to involve multiple procedures, several hospital stays, and a lengthy recovery period.

Throughout all of this, she is still caring for my two youngest sisters at home. Balancing the physical, emotional, and financial demands of cancer treatment has been an enormous challenge, and the upcoming surgeries will place an even greater burden on her. This has created a lot of uncertainty for our family, both emotionally and financially.
