Support for Charlie Lin's Recovery

An update from Charlie's Dad, Albert below. Charlie's recovery is going well and the doctors are very encouraged. He is moving from the ICU at Renown hospital in Reno to inpatient rehab in Santa Clara.

"So incredibly grateful for the care team here and the love and support of all of you who have gotten us through our darkest hour and onto a path of recovery.

Ten days ago Charlie was airlifted with a severe traumatic brain injury. Thanks to the helmet, and the fast response of his ski partner that day, the mammoth ski patrol, and the trauma drs he survived the next two days albeit in a medically induced coma and on a breathing machine. It was the hardest moment we as a family had ever been faced with. But as the fog of the coma lifted and Charlie emerged I saw something remarkable. He was calm and collected through the whole thing, powered by a deep sense of gratitude for those caring for him and compassion for those feeling for him.

In the days that have followed there has been highs and lows, darkness and light. Yet through all of it a strange kind of beauty that comes from crisis. So many small moments of Magic: in his soft profound words or in the acts of kindness from this global community.
Seeing Charlie’s younger sister sitting by his side feeding him and caring for him each day in the icu is that one thing is certain, we will all be closer and stronger because of this.

We’ve begun to learn the strange world of brain injury: from nutrition to balance exercises, electro stimulation to music therapy and repetitive reinforcement. We’ve used ai to become a pseudo neuroscientist and gathered ideas which have been utilized by his care team. But most of all, I’ve tried to bring my lived experience to Charlie to show him that the pheonix journey one takes from something like this is a path not only to recovery but to becoming more than he was.

Tomorrow we leave the icu and head for intensive rehab. We are past the ‘acute phase’ and that means he is found to make it! But knowing Charlie and based on the accelerated progress he’s shown he will not only survive but he is going to thrive!!

Thank you all for being behind us in this dark hour. Your kindness, generosity, and love has been deeply felt. In a strange way my whole life was training for this, and yet no parent can be ready to go through such a thing. Yet community makes even the darkest moment a path to beauty.

Go team Charlie, more updates to come from rehab!! Charlie’s Hero’s journey in full swing!

In Charlie’s words ‘passion is life’

With deep gratitude,
