Carmen has always been the heart of her family, caring for her elderly father and making sure everyone is looked after. Recently, while cooking dinner for her family, Carmen slipped on a kitchen mat and fell, burning her right hand, wrist, and forearm—her dominant arm—on the stove top burner as she tried to catch herself. The injury was so severe that she had to be transported to USA Health University Hospital in Mobile, AL, the closest comprehensive trauma burn center with availability. There, she has been undergoing intensive wound care and multiple skin grafting surgeries, with another surgery scheduled for December 4th.

This accident has changed Carmen’s daily life in so many ways. She is unable to work outside the home while she recovers, and simple tasks have become incredibly difficult or impossible with her dominant arm injured. Despite her own pain and challenges, Carmen continues to care for her elderly father, who relies on her as his main caregiver. On top of her medical struggles, the loss of income has forced her to relocate to a different apartment on the other side of town, adding even more stress to an already overwhelming situation.
