From Brittani's account of the events:
Sunday night, Brittani went to bed and Jeff stayed up. Shortly after midnight Monday, she woke up and heard Jeff moaning in the living room. IShe ran out and found him lying on the floor in agony and completely disoriented. He could barely verbalize anything. He finally was able to tell her that he had excruciating back pain. Several times he tried to get on his knees to get up but would collapse and said he could not feel his legs and feet.
She called 911 and he was transported to Baptist South and immediately had a CT scan that showed he had a T12 fracture that was compressed along his spinal cord. T12 was 80% crushed. He was transported to Baptist Downtown for an MRI & emergency surgery. At this point Jeffs pain is so bad he’s vomiting and shaking. He was given several doses of morphine, doubled dose of morphine, then several doses of fentanyl and nothing touched the pain. Jeff went into to surgery around 4pm for a T10-L2 instrumented fusion w/Laminectomy + Spinal Decompression. Prior to surgery, he could lift his legs a little bit. His right leg was very weak and he could not move or feel his feet or toes. His surgeon said prognosis for this type of injury is very hard to determine. He gave them 3 categories Jeff could fall into- 1) no recovery at all, 2) partial recovery or 3) 80-90% recovery. He said 100% recovery was unlikely.
Jeff and Brittani have a 5 year old daughter who has highly Autism and is highly impacted by this diagnosis. She is in a specialized program at a special needs preschool. They also have a new baby who is one year old. I am hoping that the funds from this campaign will help them while Jeff recovers and is in rehab to help him rebuild. This family has faithfully served their community and church. Jeff is on the worship team and Brittani has served in several roles in the MOPS organization. They are a young couple who have overcome incredible challenges of raising a daughter with special needs. This is the time for people to rally around them from all across the country to support and lift them up.
If you are unable to give monetarily at this time, you may also give through faithful prayers of healing as well as following up with support including help with childcare and meals. Everything counts!
