Every parents worst nightmare came true for Chad and Kristen as they received a phone call that Briley Gardner had sustained a serious head injury after falling off a pull up bar and landing on concrete and was headed to the local Emergency Room. By the time they met her at the ER, the trauma team had taken over and was rushing to assess the severity of her head injury. It was then discovered that she had fractured her skull and had 2 brain bleeds. This meant she needed to be emergency life flighted to the nearby PICU of a more specialized children's hospital. Chad and Kristen then made what must have been the worlds longest drive ever to Temple where the chopper had already unloaded Briley and treatment for stabilization was underway. Briley was in the PICU for several days and then was moved down to a more generalized floor where rehab and therapies could start. She has finally stabilized to a point where she is released to go home, but the journey ahead of them is long.
Kristen recently shared this update:
"We are not finished yet - just because we’re home doesn’t mean life got easier. It does mean we’re all together and we get to sleep in our own beds.
I’ll give you an idea of what life looked like over the past week: Briley hasn’t been awake more than 15 minutes at a time until we came home yesterday. Today, she’s only been awake for about 15 minutes…again The room was constantly as dark as we could make it, we whispered the lowest whisper, no screens or noises, and we prayed a lot as we watched her fight and live through being at a 9 out 10 on the pain scale for 5 days in a row. There is A LOT that will look different for all of us! Time to heal, patience in the process and Grace will be a lot of what we need the next few months We’re here for it - this is our marathon right now.
We praise God every day that she’s still with us because it wasn’t looking promising for those first hours. All of her doctors made it very clear to her and us that this IS A BIG DEAL! It’s not a concussion or a severe concussion - it’s a Traumatic Brain Injury - it’s not a cool club, but it’s where we’re at and we’re moving forward!"
As the medical bills start to pour in and the journey of weekly therapies and all that's needed is about to kick off, let's come around this incredible family and help carry this load. To give you an idea of the need they are facing- Briley's life flight alone was $200,000. That doesn't even include the hospital stay, trauma interventions, tests, scans, medications, and so much more. It's maddening how expensive it is to have an emergency.
"Better Together" is a slogan you know if you know the Gardner family. And now we get a chance to live that out! The Gardners are a family that are ALL IN wherever they go and whoever they are with. They give so selflessly of themselves and are deeply involved in so many circles of life between their jobs, church, and school. As a body of believers and community of individuals who love and care about the Gardners, let's not let this bury them. They don't have to carry this alone. Alone it's too much, but together we can all hold a portion of the hard and support them through this tremendous trial and champion them on through this road to recovery.
