I’m Chris and I’m raising funds for my sister, Lauren, and my brother in law, Brian.
On Friday, December 18th, Brian was fine until a series of events occurred that led him to need emergency surgery at a Phoenix hospital. He had a hole in his stomach so the surgeons removed the top third of his stomach. He spent the day intubated with his abdomen open with a wound vac. On Sunday, December 20th, he was taken back to surgery to check for leaks and to close his abdomen. Instead, the surgical team found they had to remove his entire stomach then connect his small bowel to his esophagus. The tissue is weak due to long term acid reflux so extra sewing was involved. They also gave him a J-tube. He is back in the surgical ICU - still intubated and his abdomen is still open. Doctors inserted a mesh to help his body create tissue to close and may require skin grafts in the future.
Right now, they are going to continue to check to make sure everything is holding with his delicate tissue and work to close him. Brian faces a long road to recovery. We don’t know how long he will be in the hospital and will eventually be moved to another facility while continuing to grow tissue in his abdomen.
His wife, Lauren, and their two young children Theodore (3) and Elizabeth (11 months) can not see him or be with him during all of this. We don’t know when they’ll be able to see him and it is unknown when he’d be able to return to work.
Funds raised will go towards medical expenses not covered by insurance and living expenses for Lauren and their kids.
I will be posting updates as we have them and we ask that friends and family reach only out to Lauren at this time so Brian can rest.
