BLACK MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS
Racism has had a major impact on the mental health of Black Americans. Recent events of police brutality, coupled with the devastating effects of Covid-19, has brought more attention to the effects of racism in the Black Community. Despite calls for change, little has been done to address systemic racism. Feelings of anger, sadness, and anxiety that arises during repeated incidents of racism should be better examined and processed with competent Mental Health Professionals.
Over 7 million Black Americans reported having mental health issues. Adult Black Americans are 20% more likely to report serious psychological distress than adult White Americans but far less likely to seek care. Additionally, many Black men and women lack access to proper mental health care. Less than 2% of Licensed Mental Health Practitioners are Black, which generates concerns that most Mental Health Therapists are not culturally competent enough to treat specific issues in the Black Community.
What will this fund support?
This fund will allow Black women and men to process psychological issues and heal their trauma in safe spaces. Funds will be used specifically for individual, family, and group therapy services for Black communities. Your support will provide mental health access to individuals who typically wait months for free services, due to constant state budget cuts.
Where are the funds going?
Donations for the Support of Black Mental Health Fund will be distributed by Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Nicole Lewis , to Mental Health Therapists offering services to the Black Community. Mental Health Therapists will be vetted to ensure funds will be used appropriately. Money will be distributed directly to Therapists after communicating with clients who are unable to pay the Practitioner's full fee.
How will clients be chosen for free therapy services?
Vetted Mental Health Therapists will make their own decisions about their eligibility for no/low cost therapy. However, individuals are welcome to reach out to Nicole Lewis directly to assist with finding a Mental Health Therapist to accept donations from the Support of Black Mental Health Fund.
