Bill Matteson was the kind of person who could make anyone feel like an old friend. Outgoing and always ready with a story, he never met a stranger. For over a decade, Bill lived with stage 4 COPD, and though the disease took its toll, he remained a people person to the end. In late September, Bill passed away quietly in his sleep, leaving behind his wife Linda, his daughters, and a community that loved him.
Linda, his wife of 57 years, is now facing the overwhelming task of managing household expenses and final arrangements on a fixed income. Bill had mentioned having life insurance, but despite searching, the family has not been able to find any paperwork. The costs of the funeral home and cemetery have come as a shock, and Linda is struggling to cover these unexpected expenses. While neighbors and family have offered emotional support, the financial burden remains heavy.
Bill spent his life serving others—as a rescue squad member, EMT, town constable, deputy sheriff, and later as a custodian in the local school district, where he was affectionately known as "Poppie" by his grandchildren and the school community. He was always the first to help when someone was in need. Now, his family is hoping for that same kindness from others. Any support will go directly toward covering funeral and burial costs, and the family is sincerely grateful for every contribution during this difficult time.
