2025 has brought a series of unexpected medical challenges for me. In May, I underwent hip surgery and spent five weeks recovering, using up my paid time off. Just as I was starting a new contract focused on community-based housing supports for those with developmental services and creating universal language for everyone involved in that process—from the consumers to the case managers and home providers—I began experiencing severe headaches, vision problems, and fatigue. After multiple visits to my neurologist and a trip to the emergency room, we discovered that the shunt regulating pressure in my brain had malfunctioned. Although the issue was identified quickly, delays with insurance and surgeon availability meant I waited nearly three weeks for the necessary surgery to replace the broken valve. During this waiting period, I was unable to work due to the severity of my symptoms and the uncertainty around my treatment.
I am now home from the hospital and grateful for the help of my caregivers, but I’ve exhausted all my paid leave and won’t be cleared to return to work until at least November 17. While I’m applying for union support, there have been several holdups and I may not be eligible. The funds raised will help me cover monthly bills, medical expenses, and essentials while I recover. If additional resources come through, I’ll use any remaining funds to replace my broken adjustable bed base and mattress, which are important for my ongoing recovery. Any extra support will go toward future medical needs as they arise.
Physically, I am recovering well, but my brain will need several weeks or months to fully heal. I’m hopeful about returning to work, even if it means starting part-time as I continue to regain my strength. Looking at a computer screen is still difficult, but I’m making progress every day. I’m reaching out to my friends and community for help during this setback, and any support will make a meaningful difference in my journey back to health and stability.
