20 years ago Ben went to the hospital for pneumonia and the doctors discovered that something was wrong with his kidneys. He was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease and told that one day he would need a kidney transplant. Fast forward to today and the time came to find a match for a new kidney. A match is not easy to come by and going through the National Transplant list can take 3-5 years. Amazingly, Ben’s cousin was the perfect match for him! Ben is so thankful that his cousin generously agreed to the surgery and was available to donate his kidney at the beginning of April. Because of the size of Ben's kidneys, the doctors decided to remove both of them before he could receive the new one. This meant that the surgery would be riskier and recovery would be longer.
To prepare for surgery, Ben was put on disability leave from teaching in February which means that he has only been receiving a portion of his pay since then. Thankfully he was in good condition for the surgery and it was successful. His body accepted the kidney immediately and after a week in the hospital he is home and recovering. Many people have asked how they can help and in lieu of meals or flowers, it would be most helpful and appreciated if people provided financial support. Ben’s insurance only covers a portion of the medical bills he owes and a donation would help make up for the loss of his salary. It would mean the world to Ben and Lisa if you are able to give. Thanks again for your love and support and please feel free to share.
