Barry isn't just my cat—he's my dog’s best friend. This 7-year-old rascal has been Darcy’s sidekick since he was a puppy, inseparable ever since. Recently, though, Darcy’s been licking Barry more than usual, even in places that'd make you giggle. Turns out, Darcy knew something was wrong before I—or even Barry’s doctors—did.

A slew of imaging tests later, I was blindsided: Barry has an epithelial-based tumor in the lining of his small intestine, which has already spread to a nearby lymph node.

The vets have recommended surgery to remove the tumor and the affected lymph node, with an estimated cost of $2,800 to $3,100 This surgery alone could give Barry a better quality of life, though how much time it’ll buy him is still uncertain. Afterward, I’d like to explore chemotherapy to help with any remaining microscopic disease, but for now, just removing the tumor will keep him comfortable—let him eat better and enjoy the simple things like good food and, hopefully, some solid poops again.

All this to say, while Barry’s health and happiness are my top priority, this isn’t pocket change—and definitely one of those “out of left field” things you don’t plan for. But there’s a real chance this little guy can keep living a comfortable, happy life with Darcy and me. I want to give him that chance. I want him to have those extra days.
