We are the family of Barbara Jean Bates(July 26th 1948), and it is with shattered hearts that we share the tragic and senseless loss of someone so deeply loved.

On April 17, 2026, Barbara—an elderly woman who should have been safe in her home—was taken from us after witnessing another act of violence. She was killed senselessly, and our family is struggling to come to terms with the cruelty of it.

We always believed Barbara would pass peacefully in her sleep, the way you hope for someone who has lived a full life. Instead, her life was stolen in a way that no one deserves, especially someone who had already given so much love and life to others.

Barbara was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, and grandaunt. She grew up in Ohio and moved around over the years. She lived in Cartersville Georgia for a time and then settled in Arcadia Florida.

She loved her family fiercely and unconditionally and was always just a phone call away. She had a gentle kindness that made everyone feel safe and cared for.

She was never afraid to speak her mind and stood firmly in her beliefs. That strength was a part of who she was—bold, honest, and unapologetically herself. She found comfort in the simple things: a Coca-Cola, a cigarette, and the companionship of her beloved dogs and cats. Those everyday moments meant everything to her, and they are the pieces of her life we will hold onto forever.

She was truly loved by all who knew her. The pain of losing her this way is something we cannot fully put into words, and the emptiness left behind is immeasurable.

We are asking for support during this incredibly painful time to help cover funeral expenses and ease the burden on our family as we navigate this devastating loss. If you are unable to give, we ask that you please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers, especially her daughter Sheri and granddaughter Maddie , who should have never had to find her grandmother this way and help us share Barbara’s story.
