Family with 5 children, husban self employed. Our baby girl was born a few day eailer and everything was going great and one day thongs started to change. She bececame lethargic and her color changed and stop eating and would not wake up. The mother notice her eyes rolled up and she had a light temp 99.1, this happen Sunday. We took her to the er. They been doing test, a d here is the history. The baby has jaundice which is being treated with light therapy and is having good results with that. But she has a blood infection which has traveled into her spine and now has meningitis. she will be in the hospital for probably 3 to 4 weeks. We the parents are at the hospital with her. At this time family is watching the other 4 children. We are having some complications. During the last week Nina was able to sleep two hours last night, better from a few nights before, zero. The baby had seizures and the doc gave her seizures medication to stop them for now. Our baby had an MRI and The doctor and neurologist came in to give us the results. We were told the baby has had a stroke. The part of the brain that was affected was the right side. Which means that what is affected is the fine motor and sensory, language, and learning. The good news is that because she is so young her brain hasn't been hard wired yet and so other parts of the brain can step in and take over those responsibilities although the she may need therapy to help with that. After she has been on the antibiotics a little longer they will be doing an MRI of her spine to see if any damage has been done in her spine. Her jaundice has come down enough that they felt comfortable taking her off the blue lights so her eyes don't have to be covered. If the jaundice levels starts coming back up then she will need to go back under the blue lights. She will be on seizure meds a bit longer but she can now be fed again instead of just the IV. And now that she is also off the blue lights we can hold her as well.
She is pretty sleepy from the repeated doses of seizure meds. Because of the seizure meds keeping her from more seizures the EEG was removed this morning so no more probes and wires coming from her head. MRI was able to fit her in today to do a scan of her spine to see if any damage has been done. We will probably hear the results of that later on today. I had talked to the nurse practitioner yesterday morning and had some good news. So I was praying that yesterday would be a day of just good news and it was! Our baby girl is no longer receiving fluids through the IV, she at this point is being bottle fed since it takes too much energy for her to nurse, but I do have the go ahead to nurse her as well when she is ready and has the energy. And like I mentioned yesterday they removed the EEG, which was more good news. So that was
I wasn't able to speak with the neurologist yesterday, but I did speak with the nurse practitioner late last night who read through the MRI report of Kaylani's spine. She said that she did not see anything in the report indicating any damage. So we still have to talk to the nuerolgist to make sure, but it seems like all may be good with her spine. And our little girl looks like a normal little girl again minus a few wires and IV line. She can now be swaddled in a blanket and this morning when I fed her the nurse had even put a onesie on her. Around 2 o'clock this morning she had lost both IV lines and had to have another one put in. Poor baby has been poked with countless needles since she has been here. Today they will probably be putting in a pick line catheter, I think that was the name. Which is a sterile procedure so I will not be able to be with her during that time. The NP explained that as being basically an IV line that goes into her wrist/arm and goes all the way up her arm and it is for long term use for giving her meds. So yesterday my prayer was answered and it was a day of only good news! Of course she is not out of the woods yet and we don't really know what her future will look like because of her stroke but we are thankful, blessed, and encouraged with how she is progressing. Update:
She is getting a little stronger. She is keeping her eyes open a bit longer throughout the day. She was able to nurse for the first time this morning since we've been here, but since early this morning she has not been able to do it again. The nurses attempted to put the PIC line in yesterday without success. The line went in really easily but as they were trying to get it in the right position it ended up clogging up so it was no longer usable. I just finished talking to one of the nurses that was helping the doctor yesterday and he commented on how easily it went in but that he problem they had with positioning it, he has never seen. The plan is to try again today. Pray for success. Putting the PIC line in required a dose of morphine to keep Kaylani nice and still and in between each try to get it in the right place they do an x-ray. They also stopped the seizure meds yesterday. So in a few days once the meds have had sometime to wear off they will put the EEG back on her to see if they find any seizure activity. The doctor who has been here since she was admitted on Sunday is very happy to see how well she is looking and doing. She said that if we had waited longer to bring her in the circumstances would probably be very different right now and that she may not even be here today. She also said that they have only done 2 cultures of her blood. The first one confirmed the type of bacteria and the second was completely clear of any bacteria. She said that she has never seen that happen before where there is no bacteria in the second culture. We also talked about the jaundice and how the bilirubin can leave deposits on the brain which there is a possibility that it can impair her motor skills among some other things. We may be able to see that in the next MRI anything in not sure. And the next MRI is to be scheduled for the end of next week or the beginning of the following week. Thank you all for your prayers and please all pray for our other children as well. They aren't used to me being away from them and a couple of them have had some meltdowns. It's been hard for them too. Our Family is stressed, both parents staying at hospital, the dad has been limited in work. Income coming in is lot less, and family watching kids are stress and want to go back home. Not sure what we need to do. Dad needs work to support family and medical bills. Need help temporarily, so the dad can stay home and watch the other kids and travel back and forth to hospital.
