On Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 10:00PM, Courtney Dwyer and Tyler Cardin welcomed their son Johnny James (JJ) Cardin to the world. Unfortunately, Courtney’s delivery led to significant complications where JJ was without oxygen for a total of 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Although he began taking breaths spontaneously, the period of hypoxia (lack of oxygenation to the brain and vital organs) has led to a condition called encephalopathy caused by swelling of the brain. Courtney and JJ were urgently transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital where JJ is now being cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). After a series of seizures, JJ is now intubated and receiving medications to prevent further seizures and brain damage. He is on a cooling protocol to reduce the swelling in his brain, and is scheduled for an MRI later this week. We will not have a sense of any potential long-term damage until his testing at the end of the week comes back. This, of course is a very stressful, overwhelming, and uncertain time for Courtney, Tyler, and their families. They appreciate your support, but ask that family and friends refrain from reaching out at this time for additional information. Updates will be given as they become available. In lieu of outreach, gifts, flowers, etc. we ask that you consider giving what you can to help Courtney and Tyler in this difficult time. With your support they will be able to stay close by to MGH and cover any unexpected expenses related to JJ’s recovery. Please send positive thoughts, prayers, and love to JJ, Courtney, Tyler, and the entire Cardin/Dwyer family.
