My granddaughter and her husband, Ashley & Ryan Rosemergy, are expecting a baby in March. During one of Ashley’s scans, they learned their baby has a serious heart condition. It is a rare and complex condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Basically, the left side of the heart is not growing properly, possibly missing the left ventricle, and the right side of the heart is working double time to supply blood and oxygen to the body. This congenital heart condition is rare and will involve multiple surgeries for the baby, starting at birth. What started out as a “let’s find out the gender of the baby so we can plan a gender reveal party” has turned into a “please do everything possible to save our baby”.

Ashley and Ryan live in Norway, Michigan, but the closest hospital that can treat this condition is in Madison, Wisconsin. They have been traveling back and forth to Madison for the past couple of months for extensive testing and surgical planning. She will deliver via a scheduled c-section on March 8th at UnityPoint Meriter Hospital at the University of Madison. The baby will then be transferred to Children’s Hospital in Madison for surgery. Ashley works as a home health care nurse in Norway, and she has three other children at home. She has been told to prepare to spend an extended amount of time in Madison. The emotional and financial stress has been overwhelming for this young family, and it has only just begun.
