*Updates at the bottom*
Hello, This is Jenny, she is 9 years old and going though a very tough time. In 2022 she was diagnosed with rheumatic fever.
This was caused by Strep A, and unfortunately it caused damage to her heart.
Thankfully she just needed monthly antibiotics and didn’t require surgery.
Which brings us to this week.
Jenny had been air lifted from Fort Frances to Thunder Bay, and now to the ICU in London, Ontario.
On top of Rheumatic fever, she also has pneumonia in both lungs and fluid in her chest cavity. Her heart has now sustained further damage.
Doctors are not fully aware yet, as to what else is going on, as pneumonia, strep and rheumatic fever aren’t typically experienced together.
She is under going a lot of testing to find answers.
currently Jenny's treatments include, high flow oxygen, IVs, a mix of steroids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, as well as pain medication.
The family has been given a time line of at least being in London a couple weeks with the chance of it being much longer.
Jenny's brother and Step Dad were able to visited with her in Thunder Bay for a day, but when her condition suddenly and dramatically worsened, They had to return to Fort Frances.
Jenny was only able to have her mom, Ashley Quinton accompany her on the flight to London.
Ashley is expecting (17 weeks) a new sibling for Jenny and her brothers and could really use some support while in London. She is missing work, and unable to get into Ronald McDonald house at this time. We would like to relieve some of her financial burden of the cost of the hotel, her bills, and the cost of a train ticket to get her partner to London.
*Update, February 20
Jenny was able to have the oxygen off today, Ashley is hopeful to get back to Thunder Bay soon.
*Update, February 22
Jenny has had a bump in the road and is back on oxygen, Ashley was really feeling optimistic about maybe getting her transferred to Thunder Bay soon, but right now it appears they will be in London a while longer as originally predicted.
*update, February 25
Jenny and Ashley have been flown back to the Thunder Bay Health Science Centre to awaiting tests/results coming this week, which will determine decisions regarding potential surgery in Toronto.
*Update, March 15, 2024
Jenny has been in Thunder Bay again for a few days, she has swelling on her heart again. there is no definitive answer as to why. She is on medication to keep her heart going at the moment. Ashley is having to pay for hotel rooms and cabs again, as the hostel is not available, to try and offset this expense we are again asking for donations.
*March 17
Jenny has had some improvement with the inflammation. She has an Echo Cardiogram scheduled for Tuesday, and hopefully she can head home Friday if the results allow it. Fingers crossed.
