Ashleen Coyle is one of two graduating seniors in our competitive dance family. Last summer Ashleen suffered from her first seizure and has recently been diagnosed with localization-related epilepsy. In the past few weeks the frequency of her seizures has increased. On October 31st, she suffered four seizures at school and was emergency transported to the hospital. This past Monday, November 11th, she suffered another at what is supposed to be her safe and happy place- the dance studio.
As you can imagine hospital bills and doctor visits are piling up and right now there is no end in sight. At the moment she is unable to participate in any physical activity, so we are taking her return to dance week by week.
As a community, we want to rally behind Ashleen because she is truly one of a kind. She is the first to say hello to everyone who walks into the studio and comes to every class eager and ready to learn. Her own mother recently lost her dance studio leaving a large economic burden on the family. Recently Ashleen and her mother have lost medical insurance as well. We want to help support and lift up such a deserving family during this time of need.
We hope you will join us in action, prayers, thoughts, and by sharing this campaign with our dance and Charlotte communities. If you are able to give, please know that every contribution is greatly appreciated.
A note on the development of Ashleen's epilepsy- Ashleen's epilepsy is a result of a stroke she suffered in utero that resulted in a brain lesion likely from when her mother broke her wrist during pregnancy. The lesion is the known reason for her seizures and the cause of her epilepsy. The lesion is at the TPO junction in her brain which controls so many things she has struggled with her entire life such as language, writing, reading, processing, memory and a host of other struggles that really complicate academics and life in general. Young adulthood is typically the time these lesions begin to throw seizures and no one really knows why the seizures begin, but without medication she will continue to seize chronically.
