On February 10, 2020, Aquil was admitted to the ER with what initially appeared to be a worsening case of the flu. Two days later, he was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a rare but very severe allergic reaction to over-the-counter or prescribed medication that affects the skin and mucous membranes.
SJS affects just 1 to 2 million people per year, and complete recovery can take months. To combat the life-threatening effects of this condition, Aquil is currently being treated in the burn unit at the University of Chicago Hospital. He has already had to undergo eye surgery to prevent permanent damage to his eyesight.
Doctors estimate that Aquil is in for a month-long stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which will likely result in a hospital bill in the high 6-figure range for him and his family.
Aquil, who has spent nearly his entire career working for numerous nonprofit organizations—is a loving son, brother, father and friend who has always been there to support his community and the people he cares about. We are asking for your help to offset Aquil’s medical expenses and support him in his journey to recovery ahead.
No donation is too small, and we truly appreciate any amount you can give. If you are unable to donate, please share this fundraiser page so we can reach as many potential supporters as possible.
On behalf of Aquil and his family, we thank you for your kindness and generosity during this difficult time.
