Since Gordon’s death in July, Allie has gone from a loving thoughtful child to a self-destructive teenager trying to manage PTSD, depression and anxiety. She lost the one person in her life who gave her strength and support, and feels responsible. Allie needs our help to find herself again and heal her broken heart and shattered spirit.
As her mother, I have reached points of fear, worry and despair that I had never imagined possible. Over the last few months it has become increasingly obvious that Allie needs so much more than weekly therapy visits. After researching many options, we came to the conclusion that Allie would truly benefit from a wilderness therapy program to help her regain her confidence and self-worth.
She has been accepted to Open Sky Wilderness Therapy program in Colorado. We chose Open Sky for Allie because it is a therapeutic program that incorporates intense family participation and exceptional clinical expertise. She will be removed from the distractions, the temptations, and the unhealthy influences in her life. At Open Sky she will be surrounded by support groups, positive role models, and clinical experts that will help her reset and restart her life. The Open Sky Wilderness therapy program involves intensive 24/7 contact with clinicians, psychologists, counselors, medical doctors, psychiatrists and wilderness guides, which costs $565 per day. Successful wilderness therapy experiences generally require 10-12 weeks, which would amount to over $40,000 including travel and expenses.
Fortunately, we applied and were given an $10,000 scholarship from Open Sky. But now we are reaching out to our family and friends to help with the remaining expenses. We pray and thank you in advance for your support for Allie as she begins this journey back to health and happiness.
