Support for family of Alexei Evsikov

Tragically on August 25th 2022, Alexei Evsikov was unexpectedly killed in an accident in Bar Harbor, Maine, the cause of which is undetermined and under investigation. This catastrophe has left his spouse, Carrie, and their two children, Esperanza and Rafael, distraught, shocked, and heartbroken. This young family will now have to navigate their lives without their loving Papa.

This tragedy hit their family especially hard because Alexei was ineligible for life insurance as a federal contractor.

This fundraiser by Karen, a close friend and colleague, and Andrei, a childhood friend of Alexei, is to support Alexei's family. Andrei is organizing the financial transfers while Carrie is the beneficiary and recipient of the funds. All donations will directly support the Evsikov family for funeral, memorial, and burial expenses, and as an education fund for his children, Esperanza and Rafael.

Alexei will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was a witty, caring, and considerate friend, husband, father, teacher, and colleague. For Alexei, his greatest achievement was his family: Carrie, Esperanza, and Rafael and, as observed by many, Alexei and Carrie were a true team in science, family, and life.

Alexei’s sheer joys were spending time with Esperanza and Rafael in nature, from hiking and collecting mushrooms to sledding and cross-country skiing in MDI and across Maine. As well as Alexei's fondness for helping “Farma” Bob of Sunset Acres with the kids at the market. In Florida, he loved swimming, snorkeling, and shelling with the kids on the Gulf Coast beaches, canoeing on the river, and notably the thrill of amusement rides, from mild to wild, alongside his kids.

Emigrating from Kyiv, Ukraine and raised in Novosibirsk, Alexei was a great scholar and scientist, unraveling one of the great mysteries in biology: How does life begin?

To answer this question, he helped developed internationally recognized bioinformatics databases. His work with transcriptomics defined key transposons and genes for embryogenesis. Alongside being a patient teacher, he fostered a spark of curiosity in his students. He strengthened Carrie too, in her science endeavors researching the health impacts of space and environmental exposures.

Alexei looked forward to spending his life on Mount Desert Island in Downeast Maine, where both, he and his mother, considered the true paradise of Eden.
