Support for Alex Huberty & Family

Please give a financial hug to the Huberty family!

Some of you on the East End of Long Island may know Alex Huberty as the helpful computer-tech guy who keeps their business up and running. Others may recognize him as the talented trumpet player who has marched in the Memorial Day parade for over a decade, playing taps at each war memorial in Sag Harbor. He was a longtime volunteer fund-raiser for the Hayground School, too. Anyone who knows him knows he is one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet.

In April, Alex was diagnosed with Stage 3, B-cell follicular lymphoma, which has spread to his abdomen, neck and legs. While there is no cure, the survival rate for this type of lymphoma is excellent. The disease is considered very treatable, but that treatment can be debilitating while it is being administered.

Alex is undergoing a complex regimen of chemo, monoclonal antibodies, and white cell-inducing injections that will put the cancer into remission. The treatments are monthly and take three days; recovery after each round can take up to two weeks. He will do this for six months, after which he will get antibody treatments for two years.

The treatments are long and exhausting and cause severe bone pain. Brain fog and fatigue are significant side effects that worsen with each treatment. Because of this, Alex has not been able to work for more than a handful of days over the last two months. The loss of his income has been sudden and difficult for the family.

Alex lives with his wife, Erica-Lynn, in the Bridgehampton woods with their teenage kids, one at school locally and another in college. Erica, an artist and writer, is his primary caregiver and often cannot leave him to work to make up the difference. State funds that are available to help cover medical disabilities fall woefully short.

In addition some medical expenses are starting to be denied by their insurer, and as everyone knows, these can be crushing.

The Hubertys are not living an extravagant Hamptons lifestyle. They use solar panels to keep their electric bill low and a wood-burning stove to offset fuel costs. But because of the medical crisis and lost income, they are having difficulty meeting their weekly living expenses. Any donation you can make to help these good neighbors weather this difficult time in their lives would be very much appreciated!
