Alec was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma (brain cancer) in January of 2016. He had a craniotomy where they removed the tumor out of his cerebellum, brain surgery and chemo followed for the next 6 months-all while in 8th grade and into his freshman year of high school.
Shortly after his treatment, Alec began having back pain and started physical therapy, however his scans were clear. In March of 2018, he started to have severe headaches and in July his routine MRI showed a growth in his back where he had been experiencing the pain for so long.
Alec's neurology team performed a "lumbar puncture", or spinal tap. This test came back inconclusive and a biopsy of the tumor was done. It was determined that Alec's tumor could not be removed this time- it was hard and interwoven around his nerves in the spinal column.
On October 24th, 2018 Alec received intrathecal chemotherapy. That is where they infused the chemo directly into his spine instead of into his blood systemically.
In about 1 week Alec will travel to Duke University for a Clinical Trial. Meaning, this is in the development stage (before FDA approval) to try to find a cure for his type of cancer. He will be the second pediatric patient to ever try this. If the trial is successful, he will be healed and they will have all the records in place to get this treatment approved for others down the road that may get this type of cancer.
Please help us pray for Alec and his family as they embark on one of the toughest obstacles they will face in their lives. We are hoping to raise funds to help the family with their multiple trips to Duke University in North Carolina and anything else needed during this difficult time.
Thank you and God Bless.
A note from Heather, Alec's Mom:
"Alec's road has by no means been an easy one. There have been complications along the way, and as a nurse that works for the health system, I have been in awe and equally infuriated at times as well. But, in the end, there have been many blessings along the way as well. My eyes have been opened and I am one thankful mother. My son is truly a strong young man and I couldn't be prouder of his beautiful heart through all of this. It has humbled, yet strengthened him in ways I can not imagine as a teenager. I thank God everyday for His Grace, provisions, love, support, and awesome family we have been blessed with."
