Albert Kimmig, a 78 year-old, retired farmer started a controlled burn at his home farm which got out of hand. A wind came up and spread the fire at a furious rate. A shed, two old vehicles, a water truck with tank (the only source of water), a fence and a row of trees were all destroyed.
Albert was found by his wife, who was returning from Watrous Saskatchewan, some 20 km away. She saw columns of black smoke in the direction of their home. She discovered Albert unconscious some 10 feet from a blazing, hot fire.
A half-hour after 911 was called an ambulance and the RCMP arrived with a fire crew. After 2 hours of treatment in the emergency room STARS air ambulance transferred him to S’toon and from there to the Edmonton Burn Center. Albert has burns to 40% of his body, with 25% of that being 3rd degree burns. His heart and lungs are currently a cause for concern as well as the possibility of infections in his long haul to recovery. He is at a high risk and his recovery is still indeterminate
Albert Kimmig is well known in his community, a friend and helper to any and all. He would abandon his own home labours to help others. His own wife wished she was his neighbour as many of her “honey do” lists were left undone over the years.
Albert was in a coma, but now is awake and undergoing treatment. Follow posted updates for the latest.
We are asking for friends, family and well-wishers to help out with the large financial burden this will have on their family. Expenses include the following:
- intensive treatment and rehab will be ongoing, depending on his survival
- the ambulance fees and STARS air ambulance fees
- spousal travel to and from one province to another
- home maintenance and expenses
