My name is Dr. Jennifer Emejulu, owner, operator of Brightstar Care Hunterdon, Hamilton-Robbinsville, NJ.

All too familiar and tragic, is the news that another child has been the victim of senseless gun violence; that while playing outside in all their innocence their life and the lives of those who adore them have been changed forever! From a distance we all pray and shake our heads in pain and horror.

There is no distance now. Within the last few weeks, our aide, Valorie called me to tell me that her 14-year-old grandson, had been shot in head, and was airlifted to Cooper Medical Center, where he was left clinging to life. Valorie's grandson will survive. It will take a herculean effort both from a medical perspective and what the family must do to insure he makes it through this journey.

The agony and uncertainty that Valorie, her daughter, the mother of this precious child, and the rest of the family are living in, leaves them unable to see beyond the moments in front of them; yet at the same time they are asked to make life and death decisions for their adored child.

We are asking all of us to come together and support this child and his family by lifting the burden of how to go to work when they must be by his side every day to hold his hand and wipe away his tears. Like most of us work is a necessity for this family. Let's lift them up by giving them the assurance that they will have what should be a given, to remain by this child's side through his journey in what will be a long agonizing recovery. That their bills will be paid, there will be food on the table, and that medical costs will be covered.

We will remind ourselves, that it takes a village, that there but for the grace of God go I.
