My name is Ryan, and I’m updating this GoFundMe for my courageous 5-year-old son, Achilles, who recently had surgery to remove a large (the size of an adult males closed fist) ependymoma brain tumor—initially suspected as Grade IV but tentatively reclassified as Grade III after genetic testing, offering a more promising outlook. This journey has tested our family deeply, but with unwavering faith in God, we’re preparing for Achilles’ next steps: a February 9th MRI of the brain and spine to assess healing and establish a pre-radiation baseline, plus a lumbar puncture to check cerebrospinal fluid for leptomeningeal dissemination of neoplastic cells. He’ll then undergo six weeks of specialized proton beam radiation at CHOP in Philadelphia—daily Monday through Friday—to target any residual microscopic cells, as ependymoma doesn’t respond to chemotherapy. While risks to neurocognitive development and growth exist, our oncology team, including Dr. Shaw, is optimistic about minimal long-term effects, though Achilles may endure severe sickness and side effects during this grueling period. Post-treatment, monitoring will involve frequent MRIs transitioning to annual scans into adulthood for full recovery.
We’ll stay in Philadelphia at the Ronald McDonald House or an Airbnb, covering out-of-pocket costs for lodging, travel, food, and daily needs—expenses we never anticipated. Your donations go straight to these vital supports, allowing us to focus on his healing; even sharing this on social media could make a world of difference, though never feel obligated. From my heart, thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and generosity—they’re a lifeline of hope as we trust God to carry Achilles through to victory.
