My name is Areli, and I am a mother doing everything I can to keep my 5-year-old daughter, safe.

Earlier this year, I had to make the heartbreaking decision to flee my home and step away from my career as a chemist in order to protect us. What followed has been a long and painful legal process. I used all of my savings to cover legal fees so I could continue to fight for my daughter safety. We are currently in ongoing court proceedings for my daughter’s safety and the court process requires my full availability for social workers, hearings, and court-ordered obligations.

On top of this, I have had to make difficult financial choices about therapy. Both my daughter and I need consistent, quality mental-health support to process the trauma we’ve endured. While insurance options are limited, I’ve chosen to pay out-of-pocket for trusted therapists to ensure my daughter gets the care she deserves.

I do receive some government assistance, but it only covers the very basics. It is not nearly enough to manage legal fees, therapy costs, and daily living expenses while also being fully available to meet all court and social worker requirements.

Because of these commitments, working full-time right now is impossible. Every day is a balance between court requirements, legal responsibilities, and being present for my daughter during the most vulnerable time of her life.
