Bradley's Brain Surgery
Donation protected
Bradley Nelson is a fun loving 10 year old with a debilitating condition.
In first grade, Bradley began experiencing seizures. They were managed with medications until third grade, when they started occurring more frequently and unpredictably, and doctors have been unable to identify where they're originating, nor control them with meds for any extended period of time. There have been days where he has had seizures 1-2 times per hour. This has prevented him from being able to enjoy normal childhood activities as simple as riding a bike.
Since then, Bradley has had numerous testing, including inpatient observation at both Barbara Bush and Boston Children's Hospital. He's been diagnosed with refractory epilepsy, and suffers from both localized focal seizures and generalized tonic clonic seizures. He has a team of 14 doctors and is the subject of several research groups at Boston Children's due to the rarity of his condition.
After all of this testing, Bradley has become a surgical candidate, so there's beginning to be a light at the end of the tunnel and a hope for him to be able to live a seizure-free life.
Next month, Bradley will be undergoing Stereo-EEG monitoring at Boston Children's Hospital. This will involve an 8 hour procedure where approximately 20 EEG probes will be drilled into his brain. The probes will remain in for 7 days while Bradley is closely monitored. The hope is that this will finally pinpoint where in the brain his seizures are originating, and doctors will be able to perform a second stage surgery after the probes are removed, which will stop the seizures permanently.
This will involve a lengthy hospital stay, which means Bradley's hardworking parents will be taking time off from work to be by his side. This is in addition to time they've already missed for testing and caregiving. They've made it this far on their own financially, but any donations to assist with travel and lodging expenses associated with Bradley's upcoming procedures (or normal household bills!) would go a long way towards peace of mind, and allow them to focus on Bradley during this critical time.
