The Brown County Volunteer Fire Department is rallying around one of our own.

One of our volunteer firefighters — a dedicated public servant who has given countless hours protecting our community — has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

For years, this firefighter has answered the call for others, responding to fires, crashes, and medical emergencies across Brown County — all without pay, all out of a deep commitment to service. Now, it’s our turn to answer the call for him.

Unlike paid, career firefighters, volunteer firefighters in Indiana are not eligible for any state-funded cancer assistance programs. There are no safety nets, no insurance supplements, and no presumptive cancer coverage for the men and women who volunteer their time and risk their health to protect their neighbors. When a volunteer firefighter is diagnosed with occupational cancer, they and their families bear the burden alone — emotionally, physically, and financially.

Cancer treatment is physically, emotionally, and financially exhausting. While he focuses on fighting for his health, we want to ensure he doesn’t have to fight financial hardship alone. Funds raised will go directly toward medical expenses, travel for treatment, and any other essential living costs during this difficult time.

We are asking our community — friends, neighbors, and anyone who values the work of our volunteer firefighters — to stand with us in support. No donation is too small. Every act of generosity helps lift a burden and shows that we take care of our own.
