Help Davon Vanterpools fight for life in ICU

On December 29, 2025, Davon went to what was expected to be a routine dental appointment. Later that same day, he became critically ill. He rapidly developed a high fever, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

At first, I thought it might be the flu. But his condition worsened so quickly that I knew something wasn’t right and urgently pushed for him to go to the emergency room.

Despite how sick he was, Davon drove himself to urgent care. The staff there immediately urged him to go to the ER. He declined an ambulance and drove himself to the hospital, showing the strength and determination that defines him.

Once at the hospital, doctors confirmed he was in septic shock. His vital organs began shutting down. He was placed on a ventilator and put into a medically induced coma. His heart stopped twice and required resuscitation. He later underwent double bypass surgery.

Davon was care flighted between multiple hospitals to receive specialized treatment. He was placed on ECMO, a machine that temporarily functions as the heart and lungs to allow the body to rest and recover. He has required dialysis and ongoing intensive life support.

The effects of sepsis on his body have been devastating. He developed severe blistering and circulation failure. As a life saving measure, doctors performed an above the knee amputation of his right leg to prevent further systemic damage. He is also experiencing significant circulation loss in his hands, and his medical team continues to evaluate next steps.

Even in the middle of this nightmare, we have seen moments of hope. Davon has shown neurological responsiveness blinking, opening his eyes, and responding to basic commands. Those small moments mean everything to us.

Davon is known as the “Gentle Giant.” At 6’8”, he is physically strong but even stronger in heart. He is a devoted father, husband, son, and friend.

While we do have health insurance, it does not cover the full scope of prolonged ICU care, surgical procedures, rehabilitation, prosthetics, long-term recovery needs, and the financial strain of extended time away from work.

I have remained by his side every day and night. Our family is leaning on faith, love, and support from those around us during the most unimaginable season of our lives.

We know no one can carry something like this alone. Any support whether through prayers, sharing this page, or financial contributions goes directly toward Davon’s medical care and our family’s stability during this crisis.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing with us.

With love,

Alicia
