FLORENCE UMOGBAI
Greetings to all my families, friends and well wishers. I, Martin Umogbai, on behalf of my family and self with all sense of humility, responsibility, and due respect, am asking for your help to raise money for ALTERNATE MEDICAL TREATMENT for Florence Umogbai. Florence is a trained Microbiologist, a wife, and a mother of four children, the only daughter of her parents, among six other siblings is a well mannered, and humble young woman and will be turning 53 years on June 30th, 2021.
Her journey to ill health started in 2005 during her pregnancy when she was diagnosed with pregnancy induced high blood pressure (Preeclampsia). This condition was managed medically until her relocation with her family from Nigeria to Canada on the 25th of April 2011. Precisely ten months upon arriving in Canada she began to complain of occasional blackout, and was found to have abnormally low blood potassium. She was placed on some potassium medications for two weeks and asked to repeat another blood work which unfortunately showed that the problem lingered. As a cautionary measure, she was admitted to the North York General Hospital in February 2012 . Her diagnosis, Hypokalemia, was confirmed by an endocrinologist soon after.
Unfortunately, the situation worsened. Shortly, about two weeks after her discharge, Florence presented with gait and balance disturbances that resulted in repeated falls and constant need of support when sitting or walking. She also showed fluctuations in alertness, speech, memory disturbances, bladder incontinence, drooling, tremor and spasticity. The sudden gradual progressive decline of her neural functions resulted in the loss of her motor skills which caused her to be entirely dependent for any daily activities.
Florence became an Out-Patient in most of the specialist hospitals within Toronto. She visited Endocrinologists, Gynecologists, Neurologists and Geneticists, all without any conclusive diagnosis. As we write, Florence has practically not walked without support for over seven years and all the earlier symptoms that took her to the hospital are still much present. The inconclusive diagnosis means Specialists’ cannot prescribe any medication apart from the ones that regulate her High Blood pressure and the Chronic Hypokalemia (low potassium in the blood).
For these reasons, we have decided to re-route her treatment from the Conventional Medicine to Alternative Medicine. We had veered into Alternative Medicine a few years ago and noticed some material progress. However, due to the huge cost outlay we had to discontinue her treatment. Therefore, the money to be raised will be used for her treatment plan as stipulated by the Naturopathic Doctor. It will be used for paying consultation for every visit and in collaboration with the Conventional Medicine practitioners, it will also cover the Medications as recommended, medical supplies and special Nutrition as specified by the experts.
Florence barely spent ten months in Canada seeking to have a good life having emigrated from Nigeria. Her last child being only 6 years old when she became ill, she missed some major milestones in the lives of her children. Both of us have lost all our parents during these years in her battle with ill health and she did not know what grief meant at those passages. As we speak Florence still believes that her mum is alive.
