On Monday morning (11/17), our youngest cat, Fish, was admitted to an emergency veterinary hospital due to weird behavior and not eating. We thought he may have developed anxiety after being spooked by something or maybe a thyroid issue that could be easily diagnosed and maintained. After initial bloodwork, we found out that Fishy's creatinine levels were highly elevated, indicative of an acute kidney injury. An ultrasound also revealed fluid around his kidneys, which meant there was likely inflammation. The critical care specialist began him on antibiotics and fluids in hopes that an infection may be causing his kidney issues; however, Tuesday morning reevaluation showed even higher creatinine levels and stones in his kidneys and ureters. After exhausting all medication options, we were left with a choice of humane euthanasia or a special surgery called subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB). Given Fishy's young age (3 years) and lack of previous kidney issues, after speaking with an internal medicine specialist we have decided to go ahead with the surgery and give Fishy the best chance we can. This surgery is very promising for cats like Fish and we expect him to live a happy and fulfilling life afterwards. He is scheduled for this surgery at some point tomorrow and if everything goes well, he should be able to come home with us in 3-5 days and in time for Thanksgiving!

Upfront costs so far have been unexpected and substantial, including his initial stay in the emergency hospital in Greenville ($3600), and his transfer to Columbia, SC for his scheduled surgery (~ $15,000). In addition to the upfront costs, Fishy will need routine maintenance of the sub device for the remainder of his life, including flushes, bloodwork, urinalysis, etc. every three to six months. The funds raised will go towards all of the upfront costs of Fishy's emergency hospital stay and surgery. We appreciate any help and look forward to reuniting Fishy with his feline family of Edgar, Faraday, and Curie in the coming days.
