Support Fire Art Installations, Burning Man 2023

Donation protected

Hello, I am Kyle Hahn, and I would like to bring my interactive flaming sculptures, The Ring, and The Flaming Lotus, back to Burning Man this year! Both of these projects were originally built for and funded by Interfuse (a regional Missouri burn) art grants. These installations have traveled to a few different regional burns as well as Burning Man last year, where The Ring operated as a fire portal in the desert, transporting interdimensional travelers of Black Rock City from one side to the other, and also operates as a pop-up performance art space! I am seeking funding from burners who want to enjoy these interactive fire effect sculptures in person at Burning Man this year, or from those that can't be there, but want to support the burn community and experimental arts in general. I am looking to crowdsource the approximate $3,000 cost that it will take to bring these installations to Burning Man August 27th to September 4th this year.

Cost breakdown: ~$800 transport cost from Kansas City to the Black Rock Desert (near Reno, NV) and back, ~$2,000 in propane, and ~$200 in some extra parts and work gloves for the install/operation/teardown crew out in the desert.

The Ring provides a space for participant interaction, with people passing through the burning flames in both directions across the 36" wide ramps, making it accessible for all who dare. It is also a pop-up performance art space and aerial rig. Participants gift the art and beauty that is radically expressing their most authentic selves. It encourages the 10 principles of Burning Man, which include Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-reliance, Radical Self-expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation, and Immediacy! Read more at burningman.org. This year's theme is "Animalia," and I hope to see all of the exotic creatures within the ring of fire on Playa.

The Flaming Lotus is a new interactive flaming sculpture this year and still blooming, combining pieces from multiple projects. For the base, stainless steel rods were rolled and welded into place to support an 8' diameter static propane ring of fire and 5 interactive flame elements, which create bursts of flame out of the stigma and filaments of the flower overhead. An aluminum lotus flower sits atop this 15' tall structure. The bursts of flame from the flower are released by participants of the burn, with buttons built into a metal mushroom that anyone can use to make the flower bloom with fire.

If this project gets funded, I plan on setting up both of these pieces at Burning Man at 7:00 and Esplanade beginning on August 27th, for all those that will be out there!

Huge thank you to everyone who has helped build and bring these fire effects to life! Thanks for reading, and I will share some photos and video with you all post-burn!
