This is my pup, Finnick Odair. He was rescued from Louisiana and brought to Michigan in February 2023, when he was six months old. I had lost Brewster in December, but wanted another potentially big dog to protect us, and Finney seemed to be able to play the part. He was the most lovable goof in the world. My cat Rue (yes, Hunger Games fans might be sensing a theme, it is true) was terrified of my last dog, and lived in the back of the house or basement to avoid him, but Finn she will let slob all over her.
Unfortunately, in February we noticed him limping, and while we have been treating and revisiting the Vet, he was not sure what it was. It could be pre-arthritis, it could be his knee, it could be a hip. But he wasn't seeing anything on the X-Ray, and to be honest, I didn't have the money to pay for an MRI. What he was most concerned about is the equivalent for the ACL in dogs, because if that goes, there is a better than 50% chance the other will too. So I was faced with a decision, wait and see with meds and diet change or go the next step to an ortho Vet.
After talking with several people who have seen similar injuries in their dogs, I decided the wait and see method with keeping him on the pain meds, and start him on joint meds, and have him lose a little weight. And he has been doing great, eating, playing, being the lovable lump that he is. UNTIL, last night...I let him in the house and he was limping badly I felt so bad for him, but you wouldn't know he was hurting at all except his leg is up, he has not cried, whined, growled, or barked. He is even still playing with Kirby!! The only thing he can do is get comfortable, so he is pacing a lot. He can't get on the sofa without a lot of help, and he is more than half my weight so it is a little tough on both of us lol. So he laid on the floor and I dangled my hand for him to lick on all night. Ew, dog germs, get hot water get disinfect--Lucy, Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show, but it made him feel better and that is all that matters.
So here we are. He is visiting the Vet at 3pm, but I had already talked to him and it will be $3000-5500 with treatment, therapy, and meds. So I am starting a bit early and will adjust if need be. I will donate any overage to a shelter or Humane Society, if that works for y'all?! And I will get better pictures of him, but he is a typical nosey bully breed who will not miss anyone who MIGHT be willing to give him some loving!!
