A 20-Year Medical Mystery, a Tumor Named Trouble, and a Critical Turning Point
Help Finlee Wilder McGrath Get to Life-Changing Brain Surgery & Recovery
Hi friends, kind strangers, and compassionate souls —
My name is Finlee Wilder McGrath. I’m 28 years old, and I’m facing a medical crisis that’s been silently building for most of my life.
When I was just 8, I lost my hearing without explanation. No injury, no illness — just a sudden, permanent silence. After two decades of unanswered questions, the truth has finally come to light:
I have a rare tumor called a transotic schwannoma — a slow-growing, but potentially life-altering tumor that’s been pressing against the nerves that control my hearing and facial movement. It’s likely been there since childhood, and it’s continued to grow unchecked, quietly threatening more than just my hearing.
This tumor — which I’ve come to call “Trouble” — is entwined with my facial nerve. Without surgery, the risks grow with time: facial paralysis, and worsening neurological symptoms.
On May 12th, I will undergo brain surgery in New York City to remove Trouble.
It’s a high-stakes, delicate procedure involving both neurotologists and neurosurgeons. The goal is not just to remove the tumor, but to preserve what can be saved — my facial function, my balance, and my long-term quality of life.
This surgery is urgent, necessary, and incredibly expensive — even with insurance.
I’m humbly asking for help raising $20,000 to offset the substantial costs tied to this surgery and recovery, including:
• Temporary housing and travel to/from NYC for surgery and post-op appointments
• Medical expenses not covered by insurance
• Lost wages during at least 8 weeks of recovery
• Basic living needs like groceries and rent while I recover
• Rehabilitation, facial therapy, and follow up appointments
This isn’t elective. It’s life-changing. It’s about protecting the function I still have, and giving me a shot at a life without the growing threat of Trouble.
I don’t know exactly what life will sound or feel like after this — but I know I’m ready to find out. I’m ready for answers, for healing, and for a future not ruled by uncertainty.
For those of you who don't know, my wife and I have both dedicated our lives to helping others in our community. Nikki is a volunteer firefighter and full-time EMT, responding to emergencies and providing life-saving care, while I work as a Preventative Family Specialist, supporting local children and families through counseling, education, and crisis intervention. We both love what we do and feel incredibly lucky to serve others every day.
If you can give, share, or simply send some love my way, thank you. Every act of support, large or small, helps lift a burden and move me toward healing.
With deepest gratitude and hope,
The Wilder McGrath Family
