Imagine walking into an indie bookstore where everyone feels like family, where community and stories come together in a safe, welcoming space. That's exactly what the owner, Katie, has created with Finch and Fern Book Co. in downtown Sylvania. But now, the bookstore faces an unexpected challenge: a major construction project that’s threatening its very survival.

In the fall of 2023, Katie G. opened Finch and Fern Book Co. In addition to being an amazing new and used bookstore, their store is a safe space for everyone. Katie supports other small businesses, including sponsoring animal adoption events, local and out-of-state authors, and readings with children’s authors. Katie has worked hard to build a community of readers and friends and makes everyone who walks into the store feel a sense of belonging. Now more than ever, it’s important for us to support our local bookstores and libraries.

Recently, the city of Sylvania has started a beautification construction project that directly impacts the small businesses who operate in the downtown area. Unfortunately, the city is not providing any relief to the businesses for loss of revenue. On top of running uphill in an already difficult economy, it’s just not feasible for the store to remain open if we don’t help. We need spaces like Finch & Fern where we can gather, grow, and form lasting relationships within our community. Anything you can donate helps. Even if it’s $5, your donation matters.
