After nine months of uncertainty and numerous consultations, I was diagnosed with an adrenal tumor - a rare condition that disrupts hormone production essential for body functions. This has left me largely bedridden, unable to manage daily tasks, and in urgent need of life-saving surgery. Unfortunately, the necessary procedure cannot be performed in The Gambia and must be done abroad by specialists. Coming from a working-class family, we cannot afford the associated costs and are humbly seeking assistance to make this diagnosis procedure and treatment.
My name is Fatou, and I am a dedicated civil servant who serves as a Planner at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology. In this role, I contributed to the national development agenda while positively impacting lives through my work. Before the sudden onset of this illness, I was an active, studious, and joyful young woman, driven by dreams and aspirations that inspired me each day.
Beyond my professional life, I have been deeply committed to advocacy for adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health and rights. I proudly serve as the Youth Focal Person for Family Planning 2030 and previously chaired the Youth Action Movement (YAM) under The Gambia Family Planning Association. These roles have enabled me to inspire and empower young people in my community, promoting better health outcomes and fostering leadership.
This illness, however, has severely impacted every aspect of my life. Once vibrant and full of energy, I am now largely bedridden, struggling with debilitating symptoms that have left me physically and emotionally drained. My family, who comes from a below-average financial background, has supported me through nine months of relentless medical consultations and diagnostic processes. The financial strain has exhausted our resources, including my personal savings, leaving us unable to afford the surgery that is critical for my recovery.
Approximately 10 months ago, I envisioned myself in Belgium, pursuing my master’s degree, returning to my country with advanced knowledge, and continuing my advocacy work while supporting my family. Today, those dreams remain out of reach as I battle this illness. This has not only devastated me personally but has also affected my family deeply. I still hold on to the hope of regaining my health, fulfilling my aspirations, and building a future that includes marriage, starting a family, and contributing meaningfully to society.
