In the wake of the spread of COVID -19, the wildfires across the State, and the growing digital divide disproportionately affecting poor and rural communities along the Central Valley, I am hosting a fundraiser during the month of October to support the direct outreach and services provided by the Community Center for Arts & Technology (CCAT). I am inspired by the tireless work led by Armando and his team in providing critical basic needs for farmworker families, while adapting to the pressure and conditions of a COVID environment. I'll also be hosting a virtual gala celebration on October 24 to ring in my birthday and support CCAT.
Farmworker communities are currently being hit with three simultaneous concerns impacting the well-being of their health and families: limited PPE in the midst of working during the COVID pandemic, unhealthy air quality due to unprecedented fires, and poor access to reliable, high-speed broadband access for students navigating distance learning. The health, environmental, and educational inequities have only been exacerbated in this perfect storm and strain on resources. I urge you to join me in supporting CCAT's work as it evolves and adapts to meet this critical moment head on.
More information about the Community Center for Arts & Technology (CCAT): the past 21 years, CCAT has served over 20,000 low-income students in Fresno, Madera, and Kern counties by offering performing arts and technology classes, including television and radio production, digital sound engineering, stage lighting, digital photography, graphic design, web page development, robotics, drone technology, traditional Folklorico and Hip-Hop dancing, ukulele, guitar, and piano lessons. Today, as the world and country are dealing with the realities of a major pandemic, close to home the challenges are magnified by the lack of resources. CCAT has been in the front lines distributing food and other basic necessities to rural areas. While the needs can be insurmountable the staff is committed to delivering services to the most in need.
