Support Farmer Johnson's Field Mobility

Donation protected
Farmer David Johnson of Elkhorn WI has been farming and heading to market since he was 14. Giving back to community pantries and individuals every step of the way. Now at 70 years wise and disabled he needs community to show up for him. His desire to continue working the fields is as strong as when he was just starting out as a teen veggie farmer; his body is not.

After one too many falls in the fields it is time for community to care for elder Farmer Johnson allowing some ease to keep him doing what he does best: grow and pick the freshest vegetables and fruits for folks in southern WI. Funds raised will be used to support the purchase of a new/used off road, ATV type, vehicle. This type of farm vehicle will provide Farmer Johnson the independence and mobility he needs/deserves to navigate his fields in ever changing climate conditions without taking life threatening falls.

Farmer Johnson has gone through many health battles throughout his life with grace and little to no complaint. From various cancers to two kidney transplants, diabetes to the loss of his leg and more, his only care is how are the crops doing? What do the fields look like? Because as he says “People gotta eat.”

He goes to any and all costs to ensure that happens. Taking numerous falls, increasingly so the last two seasons, in the process. Even as it is becoming harder for him to navigate the fields with his subpar, not made for farming, prosthetic he is still out there living by the life motto that hangs in his shop:
Be kind. Work hard. Take pride in your work.

Farmer Johnson is a living testimony to loving one’s neighbor. Most recently (since 2021) he gives endlessly to another local farm’s community gardening program serving marginalized Littles and their families, mentors the milkmaid that farms there, and fills food pantries to the max with farm fresh extras. It is our hope the community he has loved and served so humbly will now show up for him.

Our deepest gratitude for your support as we work to surprise Farmer Johnson with the freedom to roam his fields carelessly once again.

Farmer Johnson’s balance is greatly impacted the lack of a proper prosthetic for the work he does daily. In an attempt to stay independent he uses various mobility tools, though they continuously fail in the fields. Here is using two canes in an effort to keep his balance in water logged, muddy fields. The following photo is the result.

He uses a walker but that doesn’t get far in muddy fields either. Not to mention a fall with any of these mobility tools in the fields is highly dangerous.

Farmer Johnson is a tall, y’all. Using his walker through the corn? The worst. An off road vehicle would allow him to drive the row of corn whilst picking. Did you know all his produce is picked day of or night before? Yep, sure is. Not many are out there doing it like that. He deserves dignity and safety as an elder farmer while he does. Gratitude.
