Aloha, my name is Hi’ilei Cummings, I was born and raised here in Laie (fourth generation), this town is my whole life, and I love my community deeply. The people here have always shown up for each other in the hardest times—they helped raise me, and I’ve seen firsthand how strong and caring they are. While I was fortunate not to be directly affected by the recent floods, I was there in person, witnessing the devastation to so many homes and families. It’s heartbreaking to see friends and neighbors lose their homes and belongings, especially knowing how tight finances already are in Hawaii, where the cost of living is so high. Many are scraping by as it is, and now they face the overwhelming burden of cleaning, repairing, and replacing what was lost.
That’s why I’m organizing this fundraiser—to help provide immediate relief to those who need it most. The funds raised will go directly to families in our community to help them clean up, repair their homes, and replace essential belongings. Every donation, no matter the size, can make a real difference—even providing a meal for a family for one day. If you’re not able to give, sharing this fundraiser or simply showing your appreciation for the island and its people means so much. If Hawaii has ever touched your life, now is a chance to give back. The people are the heart of this place, and it’s where the aloha spirit is truly felt.
Thank you for standing with us and helping our community recover. Your support brings hope and relief during this difficult time.
* to save any confusion, this gofund me was created by Mona-Jane Hannemann alongside Hi’ilei Cummings (who’s story you read above). The funds will be drawn by Mona-Jane and together we will disperse to the families in need through giftcards, supplies, and appliances that we will be purchasing personally and delivering as soon as the funds become available. Mahalo for your kōkua and understanding .
