We believe that all New Yorkers deserve access to good health care.
We have officially filed a lawsuit against the City, Northwell Health, and Lenox Hill Hospital to stop this project. This case is already underway, and we need immediate support to continue fighting.
Northwell Health, the healthcare giant, wants to spend over $2.5 billion rebuilding Lenox Hill Hospital into a 370-foot tower—more than double the height and mass that are permitted under existing zoning law -- to attract private pay patients from around New York, the US, and the world.
But what about the "hospital deserts" in parts of Manhattan and the other boroughs? Statistics tell the story. On the Upper East Side, known as "bedpan alley", there are 10.5 hospital beds per 1,000 residents, compared to just 0.5 on the Lower East Side and 1.6 in Queens.
We, the residents of Lenox Hill, oppose this project because it is unnecessary and harmful. With over 7,000 supporters, our goal is for Northwell to renovate the smaller hospital they have allowed to deteriorate and instead invest in areas where hospitals and beds are desperately needed.
Rather than spending billions on a massive, flashy development in a part of Manhattan that already has 5 excellent hospitals, Northwell should direct those funds to parts of Manhattan and the outer boroughs that lack access to care.
There is no medical need for this facility, especially when other communities lack hospitals. The environmental, public health, and infrastructure impacts of this project will harm the neighborhood. It is ironic that a hospital meant to help people will instead negatively impact its own community.
