A Battle That Started 17 Years Ago

Seventeen years ago, just after becoming a new father, Fabricio received life-changing news: doctors had discovered a brain tumor in a highly sensitive region. He was faced with a frightening decision: an invasive open brain surgery with significant risks, or an unconventional but promising alternative: Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Driven by hope and the desire to see his child grow up, Fabricio chose Gamma Knife. Against all odds, it worked. The tumor shrank to a manageable size, allowing him to live a full life. Though the mass never completely disappeared, it remained stable and silent... Until now.

What Is Happening Today

During recent evaluations, doctors discovered that the tumor has grown again and is now affecting multiple critical areas of the brain:

It extends toward both frontal lobes and surrounds both internal carotid arteries, which are essential for blood flow. It has expanded the sella turcica, displaced the pituitary stalk, and is pressing against the optic chiasm, crucial for vision.

The MRI suggests the mass is likely a meningioma, typically benign but dangerous in such a delicate location.

Expert Consultation and Ongoing Evaluation

Fabricio is fortunate to be under the care of an exceptional neurologist in Guatemala, who is now also in communication with the previous doctor, Dr. Isaac Wolf, a respected neurospecialist in Miami.

There is concern that, because Fabricio already underwent Gamma Knife treatment 17 years ago, he may not be a candidate for another similar procedure. However, Dr. Wolf will be reviewing all of Fabricio’s imaging and medical history to make the final assessment and determine the safest and most effective treatment path forward.

The coordination between these specialists gives us hope, but it also brings significant medical and financial challenges.

Un padre, esposo, hermano y el pilar de nuestra familia

En cada familia hay alguien cuya fuerza sostiene a todos, alguien cuya presencia da paz, y cuyo amor mantiene unida a la familia.

Para nosotros, ese alguien es nuestro hermano, Fabricio Urquizu.

Fabricio siempre ha sido un hombre noble, atento, trabajador y con un corazón enorme. Un esposo entregado, un padre amoroso y un hermano incondicional. Él es quien aparece cuando lo necesitamos, el que escucha, el que apoya, y el que siempre pone a los demás primero.

Hoy, nuestro pilar necesita de nosotros, así como nos necesitó hace diecisiete años… pero esta vez, el reto es aún mayor.

Una batalla que comenzó hace 17 años

Hace diecisiete años, cuando Fabricio acababa de convertirse en padre por primera vez, recibió una noticia que le cambió la vida: los médicos encontraron un tumor en una zona muy delicada del cerebro. En ese momento enfrentó una decisión muy difícil: someterse a una cirugía cerebral abierta, invasiva y riesgosa; o intentar un tratamiento menos convencional llamado Gamma Knife.

Con fe, valentía y pensando en ver crecer a su hijo, Fabricio eligió el Gamma Knife. Y contra todo pronóstico, funcionó.

El tumor se redujo a un tamaño manejable y le permitió seguir viviendo plenamente. Aunque la masa nunca desapareció por completo, se mantuvo estable y sin causar problemas… hasta hoy.

Lo que está ocurriendo ahora

En estudios recientes, los médicos descubrieron que el tumor ha vuelto a crecer y ahora compromete varias zonas críticas del cerebro:

La región selar (donde está la glándula pituitaria)

El tumor se extiende hacia ambas zonas frontales y rodea las arterias carótidas internas, esenciales para la irrigación del cerebro. También ha ampliado la silla turca, desplazado el tallo pituitario y está presionando el quiasma óptico, que es vital para la visión.

Según la resonancia, la masa parece ser un meningioma, un tumor generalmente benigno, pero sumamente peligroso en este sitio tan delicado.

Evaluación médica y especialistas involucrados

Fabricio está siendo atendido por un excelente neurólogo en Guatemala, quien además está en comunicación directa con el Dr. Isaac Wolf, un reconocido especialista en Miami.

Existe la preocupación de que, debido a que Fabricio ya se sometió a Gamma Knife hace 17 años, posiblemente no sea candidato para repetir el procedimiento. Sin embargo, será el Dr. Wolf quien evalúe a detalle sus estudios y su historial médico para determinar si existe alguna opción menos invasiva o si es necesaria una cirugía más compleja.
