On October 24th, Fabiola Maldonado (Guzman) went to have x-rays & a CT Scan taken because she was losing her vision at a rapid pace, she was beginning to forget things, and had excessive fatigue. On October 25th, she was notified that they found a tumor wedged between her eyes and her brain. This tumor has been pressing down on her optic nerve which explains why she was starting to lose her eye sight. It also was not allowing enough oxygen to her brain, thus she started forgetting a lot of things. She was asked to go to the emergency room, where she was then admitted into the hospital. Since October, my sister has had two trans-nasal trans-sphenoidal pituitary surgeries to attempt to remove the tumor, an external ventricular vein drain has been put in place to drain cerebrospinal fluid, a subdural drain was also put in place to drain blood that has accumulated around the brain, and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Besides these major surgeries she’s undergone several other procedures to complete revisions of the shunts and was later placed on a gastric feeding tube.

With all the surgeries that she has endured in such a short time, Fabiola now has muscle atrophy, changes in her neurological system, and is unable to speak. She’s been in ICU this entire time and her surgeons are expecting to place her into a rehabilitation facility for long term care once she becomes a bit more stable. Fabiola will need to receive physical, speech, and occipital therapy. She will also have to undergo another major surgery in the near future to remove the remaining tumor.

The best way we can support her and her family during this time is to alleviate financial concerns so she can focus her energy on resting and healing. All your generous donations will go towards surgery cost, copayments, rehabilitation / therapies, medications, and other potential expenses.

El 25 de octubre, le notificaron que encontraron un tumor encajado entre sus ojos y su cerebro. Este tumor ha estado presionando su nervio óptico, lo que explica por qué estaba comenzando a perder la vista. Tampoco permitía suficiente oxígeno a su cerebro, por lo que comenzó a olvidar muchas cosas. Se le pidió que fuera a la sala de emergencias, donde luego fue ingresada en el hospital. Desde octubre, mi hermana ha tenido dos cirugías hipofisarias transnasales transesfesnoidales para tratar de extirpar el tumor, se colocó un drenaje de la vena ventricular externa para drenar el líquido cefalorraquídeo, también se colocó un drenaje subdural para drenar la sangre que se ha acumulado alrededor del cerebro y una derivación ventriculoperitoneal. Además de estas cirugías de alto riesgo, se sometió a varios otros procedimientos para completar las revisiones de las derivaciones y luego se le colocó una sonda de alimentación gástrica.

Con todas las cirugías que ha soportado en tan poco tiempo. Fabiola ahora tiene atrofina muscular, cambios en su sistema neurológico y no puede hablar. Ha estado en cuidados intensivos todo este tiempo y sus cirujanos esperan colocarla en un centro de rehabilitación para cuidados a largo plazo una vez que se vuelva un poco más estable. Fabiola necesitará recibir terapia física, del habla, y occipital. También tendrá que someterse a otra cirugía en el futuro para remover por completo su tumor.
