COVID-19 has rapidly spread across the world. At the beginning of April 2020, Malawi received it’s first confirmed case of Covid-19. Within a week eight patients were confirmed, with one passing away. It is expected that the virus will have a heavy affect on the nation of Malawi, as it lacks necessary infrastructure to fight such a battle. Being such an impoverished nation with the majority of it's population living below the poverty level; malnutrition, HIV and compromised immune systems are common. There are currently 24 ICU beds and currently no working ventilators within Malawi. The majority of the population won't have access to the ICU beds and proper care needed to treat Covid-19.
Many people are scared as they lack the resources to self isolate, wash their hands and take the precaution needed to protect oneself from the virus.
Extending Hope Organization has been operating a village clinic in the district of Ntcheu for the past 5 years. It has been the closest healthcare center available to over 40,000 inhabitants.
Our Health Center urgently needs the following resources in order to be able to support it’s community through education, prevention and treating the ill.
Masks
Protective gear
Medication
Hand Sanitizers
The best way for us as a nation to fight against this pandemic is to prevent it as much as possible, which is why getting hand sanitizer, soap and preventative supplies to the villagers is of utmost importance. The majority of villagers do not have access to internet and are not receiving the information necessary to prevent the virus from spreading. They are in need of teachings and demonstrations to fully know the risks, how to protect themselves and what to do if symptoms arise.
As an organization, we hope to raise $20,000USD in order to fully equip the clinic to serve it’s community at the best capacity during this pandemic. The supplies and equipment will be bought from South Africa via Air Freight. The supplies are ready to be shipped as soon as we raise the funds.
All funders will get weekly communication on how the money is being used and what impact its having.
The organization will be sending emails with pictures, numbers of people being helped even videos of progress.
We are so grateful to all who are able to support our cause. Your donations will go a long way. No donation is too small. We thank you in advance for donating towards this campaign. Your money will make a big difference and saves so many lives.
More information:
In 2011 Decent and Nadja Levson pioneered Extending Hope Organization with the vision to help the poor of Malawi by giving them access to healthcare and education. Their desire is to help the hopeless through healthcare and education.
After seeing how people were dying from diseases that are easily curable in 2015 they built and opened a health center in the district of Ntcheu in Malawi.
Being Malawian and raised in the village, Decent knows firsthand how dire the need for proper healthcare and education is. Before opening the clinic people traveled 6 miles to a small clinic with limited resources. To see a doctor they traveled 31 miles, typically by foot or bicycle. As a couple, Decent and Nadja have raised the finances to support these projects through connections in Switzerland (where Nadja is from, and where they lived for 9 years) and the United States.
We know that many people are experiencing financial difficulties at this time. We are so grateful to anyone who is able to support this cause and help the nation of Malawi.
