Support Evan & Kat's Post-Fire Housing & Music Studio Funds

On April 28th, my close friends Evan and Kathryn Mui had just arrived to San Diego for a family funeral. 15 minutes later, they got a call from a neighbor that there was a fire at their apartment back in Los Angeles, which is also the location of Evan’s music studio, Weathervane Sound.

Luckily, their two cats, Nico and Calliope, were unharmed, but as a result of the fire and a lack of cooperation from their landlord / property management, they have lost access to their apartment / studio. They have had to stay in hotels and Airbnbs while searching for a new place to live, which has presented some surprisingly high expenses that weren’t budgeted for, as well as keeping up with their work schedules while dealing with the uncertainty of having a roof over their head every night.

Kathryn works with children in the Northeast Los Angeles area as an outdoor educator teaching them about the native flora and fauna, and aside from recording, Evan also works at The Regent Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, the fire also occurred while finishing up work on the new record from Evan’s band wake up, their first new recording since 2015, which is being produced by Adam Lasus (Helium, Lilys, Yo La Tengo).

In the past, Evan has also worked, produced, recorded, and played with musicians like:

LILYS
Papa M (David Pajo)
Surfer Blood
Jolie Holland
Photo Ops
Emily Edrosa (Street Chant)
Kind of Like Spitting
birddog
Built Like Alaska
Chelsea Rose (Summer Twins)
The Flash Hits

Due to the fire, Evan and Kat lost a large amount of items and expenses involving furniture, appliances, artwork, and food, as well as costs incurred from veterinary care for their two cats.

Evan and Kat are two of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, and could really use some help (but would never ask for it) to make ends meet during this tough time in order to have a comfortable place to live and to keep the Weathervane Sound studio alive in a positive new environment.

Please donate what you can if you’re able to, or feel free to share kind words / support, and we will share with the both of them :)

All the best,
Reed
